COMISTON STABLE, FAIRMILEHEAD, EDINBURGH
Georgian stable block conversion featuring four bedrooms, an original 16th century defence tower, double-height entrance hall, handmade oak staircase, internal courtyard garden and large double garage.
Tucked away at the end of a dramatic sweeping driveway, lay this beautiful, historic building in the Fairmilehead area of Edinburgh. The B listed building had fallen into severe disrepair and was listed on the ‘at risk’ register. We set about converting the old stable block into a magnificent, contemporary four bedroom home.
To preserve as much of the original character of the building as possible, we employed the services of a stonemason to rebuild the collapsed walls of the east and west wings using the original stone. However, the interior of the development is thoroughly modern, with a reconfigured layout that is perfect for today’s lifestyles and makes the most of its courtyard setting.
The finished building is a striking blend of golden sandstone, glass panelling and modern Georgian windows. The double-height entrance hall has a star shaped ceiling that follows the lines of the original beams. We used materials of the highest quality to create a hand-made oak staircase with glass and steel balustrade and the property features underfloor heating, oak flooring and porcelain tiling. The double glazed wooden doors and windows were all handmade to suit the stunning exterior and provide the perfect finish to this very special building.
“Excellent developers. Phenomenal attention to detail, care and attention and quality of workmanship. The after sales service is outstanding.
We’ve been in for nearly 2 years now and the house looks as good as the day we bought it.”
